âSO, HOW WAS EVERYTHING?â Trish asked as Paige paid.
âThe food was great, but the dessert was absolutely amazing. You should think about adding that sampler to the menu,â she said.
âI probably will, if for no other reason than to use it all up,â she said with a grin. âYou two ladies have a good night.â
âYou, too,â we said.
As we walked out, I asked Paige, âAre you heading home?â
âNo, Iâm going back to the store,â she said as she pointed to her nearby bookstore. âCare to come in and continue our chat?â
âIâd love to, but I have to make donuts bright and early tomorrow morning.â
âWeâre both too dedicated to our work for our own good; you know that, donât you?â
âI suspect that itâs true,â I told her.
As I walked the short distance back to the cottage I shared with Jake, I decided to text my three book club friends again. It probably wouldnât yield any better results than my last few attempts, but I wasnât going to just give up, at least not yet.
By the time I was ready for bed, there still wasnât any response from them.
Maybe Iâd hear from them tomorrow, but for now, I needed my sleep.
As Iâd told Paige, it would be time to get up to make the donuts yet again soon enough.
The first thing I did when I woke up the next morning was turn on my phone and check my messages.
Iâd been hoping to get a reply from at least one of my fellow book club members, but unfortunately, not a single one of them answered.
There was a nice message from Jake wishing me a good nightâs rest though, so I took solace in at least that much, that there was someone out there who loved me.
Most days, that was more than enough for me.
I got to the donut shop and quickly forgot about the slight from my old friends. After all, I was in my element again, making donuts and shutting out the rest of the world, even the sordid one Gary Shook had created for himself. Flipping on switches on the coffee urn and the deep fryer seemed to turn a switch on in me as well, and I found myself happier than Iâd been in days just compiling the ingredients for todayâs donuts. On a whim, even though we were in late summer, I decided it was the perfect time to make a surprise batch of pumpkin cake donuts and some triple-cinnamon donuts for Cynthia as well, just in case she came by the shop. After the batters were all mixed for the cake donuts, I began filling my dropper and placing rounds directly into the hot oil, flipping them halfway through the frying process. I knew that some donut shops, especially the big chains, had automated just about every step of their process, but I took great pride in what I did, and when a donut didnât come out perfectly, it wasnât rejected. Instead, I put it out for sale just like all of its more perfect sisters.
